JOB  SUMMARY  

Reporting to the Senior Medical Officer this position provides hands-on care to patients as instructed by a physician or clinical officer by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing and monitoring patients’ conditions and maintaining records.  The position will work on shift schedules. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assess patients undergoing care. 
  • Administer oral, IV, IM and subcutaneous medications. 
  • Administer oxygen therapy and IV infusions. 
  • Administer blood transfusion. 
  • Documenting patient information using SOAPIE format. 
  • Inserting catheters and NG tubes as needed. 
  • Order routine lab tests e.g. MPs and FBC. 
  • Collect specimen for lab tests as ordered. 
  • Dress wound and remove sutures. 
  • Adhering to organization’s policies, procedures and standards of practice for all services being provided in the department. 
  • Maintaining accurate records of all clients. 
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for staff, patients and clients by ensuring infection prevention, risk management and incident reporting. 
  • Providing health education to employees and guardians. 
  • Attending in-service trainings and professional continuous development seminers 
  • Teaching colleagues as well as patient attendants during in-service education trainings. 
  • Ordering supplies from various departments e.g. pharmacy and lab. 
  • Ensure that resources in the department are used to maximum effect. 
  • Ensure registration annually with the relevant professional bodies. 
  • Any other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Usually working as part of a team of medical professionals, the Nurse i will often be placed in difficult situations in which others, especially patients and family members, may need emotional support on top of the medical care. The work environment will expose the incumbent to diseases and infections on a daily basis as she must come into close physical contact with patients while providing care.  The atmosphere can be stressful at times and she will be required to handle emergencies from time to time. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS  

  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing  
  • Minimum 4 years practical and continuous experience in Hospital nursing care and emergency room  
  • Experience in handling emergencies including Trauma and orthopaedics is key.  
  • Experience with construction work is an added advantage. 
  • Registration with Nursing Council of Malawi.
