KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

Responsible for fault finding, repairs, maintenance of earthmoving equipment  

  • Repair – Diagnose, disassemble, and remove damaged parts from equipment; reassemble and test for normal function  
  • Installation of Equipment – Prepare for installation; install equipment using hand/power tools, welding and cutting, and a variety of rigging equipment 
  • Machine Operation – Select stock, set up machines, use precision measuring equipment, operate machining equipment, and check part functioning 
  • Parts Design/Redesign – Analyze part failure/malfunction, consider alternatives, use precision measuring equipment, and draw or sketch revision of new part 
  • Preventive Maintenance – Perform routine scheduled maintenance tasks related to lubrication, filter systems, drive components, equipment adjustment; condition monitoring measurements; and perform tests on plant equipment 
  • Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) – Monitor the functioning of HVAC, perform routine maintenance of HVAC equipment, perform minor repairs, and prepare brief reports on equipment condition. 
  • Providing technical advice to construction plant users  

Safety Management 

  • Maintain a safe working environment according to safety policy and procedures 
  • Maintain company and legal requirements for site safety, including but not limited to the safety of working conditions, plant and equipment, as well as the issue of safety equipment and clothing.   
  • Ensure timeous corrective action is taken in respect of non-compliance  
  • Document all safety incidents 
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained. 

Daily Duties 

  • Responsible for diagnosing, overhaul, repair, tune maintain and test diesel and petrol/gas-powered vehicles, including trucks, bulldozers, and other earthmoving equipment e.g generators, pumps, compressors and drilling rigs 
  • Detect mechanical and electrical faults by using instruments that check charging and starting circuitry, batteries, ignition timing, fuel injection systems and speed control, cylinder compression, engine condition, braking efficiency and wheel balance and alignment 
  • Repair and maintain the hydraulic components of diesel and petrol/gas engines that are used to power attachments such as hoists, booms, scrapers, buckets, and augers 
  • Use oxy, electric, hand fitting or machining process to replace or repair faulty parts 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

  • Plant Maintenance qualification 
  • Millwright Trade Tested or 
  • Earthmoving Trade Tested 
  • At least 3 to 5 years relevant experience in construction projects  
  • Knowledge of different machinery 
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures. 
  • Knowledge of relevant company policies, processes, and procedures. 
  • Experience with WTP, Water Retaining Pump stations, Reservoirs and Pipeline. 
  • Valid drivers’ licence  
  • Salary: To be negotiated  

COMPETENCIES AND PERSONAL QUANTITIES 

  • Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including the ability to lift and carry objects  
  • Knowledge of hydraulics 
  • Must possess a valid South African driver’s license 
  • Ability to become certified mobile crane driver  
  • Willing to work outside in a variety of weather conditions 
  • Willing to attend specialist training offered by plant machinery manufacturers.
